My definition of courage is not being afraid to take a risk. A courageous person to me is someone who stands up for their beliefs and what they feel is right. Also, being courageous is not having fear when facing difficulty or criticism. There are numerous times when I’ve had to show courage. Let me tell you about one of them.
One night, my father asked my siblings and me where we wanted to go eat. We had been contemplating for hours and every once in a while someone would throw an idea out. Eventually, we decided to go to Applebee’s because it was late and it was convenient. On the way there, we dropped my grandmother off at her dance class a few blocks away from the restaurant.
We arrived at the restaurant around nine fifteen after dropping my grandmother off. We were seated about five minutes later. We ordered drinks and appetizers as entrees and a few extra things. After we finished eating, we asked for boxes and a check. Our waitress left to go retrieve our check. She returned to the table with a check of approximately $150-200. My dad then gave our waitress his card. She took forever to come back with the receipt, and we were tired, so my siblings and I went out to the car before she returned.
We sat in the car for at least 15 minutes before receiving a phone call from my father. He said that he realized that he had brought the wrong card out of the house and the funds on that card were insufficient. At that moment, laughter was our only medicine because our options for a solution were very few. He asked if I or my sister had any money on us. My sister only had $50 and I didn’t have any. Then I suggested that I go pick my grandmother up from her class.
In that moment, it seemed as if it was our only hope. So my dad agreed and told me to drive very carefully. Thankfully, I arrived safely but, had a little trouble at the gate. After reaching my grandmother and telling her about our predicament, she drove us to the bank and back to the restaurant where my father awaited. He paid for the bill and then we were on our way.
In these circumstances, I felt I showed much courage by driving safely at night without a license. Also, I didn’t have any fear while facing a seemingly overwhelming situation. This is why I feel that I showed an abundance of courage at this time in my life.
